CALLING all allies - CA Domestic Worker Campaign
Children & Families for AB 889! Press conference and march around the capitol

It's crunch time to pass Bill AB 889 to grant basic protections for over 250,000 domestic workers across California. If you have not yet been able to support the campaign, now's your chance! August 21 will be our last big push to win Senate votes and we need your help now more than ever! Join domestic workers and our allies in the faith, student and labor community to make 2012 the year that California ends these unjust exclusions.

We can't do this without you.
Domestic Workers are mothers, aunties, and grandparents that do the work that makes all other work possible. It's time they get the basic rights that other workers already enjoy! On August 21st, children and families will rally in Sacramento for a statewide event “The Time is Now!” calling on legislators to pass the CA Domestic Workers Bill of Rights (AB 889).
    • When: Tuesday, August 21st, 2012
Where: Sacramento State Capitol
      • Buses Leave from the Bay Area: 8:30a.m.
      • Buses Leave from SoCal evening of August 20: time TBA
    • What: Children & Families for AB 889! Press conference and march around the capitol, followed by a Children's festival and lobby visits.
      --> RVSP here <--
Also...WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! To help with the August 21 festivities, contact Irene: ms.irenejor@gmail.com

Make It Happen - Get the Real VAWA Passed!

Take action! Call and email your senators and representatives and urge them to oppose the current House version of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization, and support the inclusive, bipartisan Senate version of this lifesaving legislation that protects ALL survivors.

We're running out of time, Congress members will soon go home to campaign for re-election and anti-VAWA extremists are holding up the bill in hopes of either forcing acceptance of the House version or blocking reauthorization altogether.

The House bill 4970, or the "Adams Bill" is an unacceptable version of VAWA that imposes new reporting restrictions on immigrant survivors of violence as well as Native American women, communities of color, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender survivors. We are urging all of our activists to take over the next weeks and during the August recess to call upon their members of Congress. Ask them to work with their colleagues to get the Senate version of VAWA approved NOW and sent to President Obama for his signature.

    TAKE ACTION:
The National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women has all phone numbers and sample emails available here.

JOIN V-Day & CODEPINK: Bring Your Vagina To The RNC!
On August 27 - 30, V-Day and CODEPINK activists will gather in Tampa, FL outside of The Republican National Convention to bring awareness to the way women's rights are threatened worldwide--from anti-choice legislation to inappropriate rape jokes to economic inequality to war and occupation overseas that disproportionately affect women's lives. Help encourage Republicans to honor women, to protect women's rights, and protest war and occupation. JOIN US!

This is a very IMPORTANT message.

Let's stand shoulder to shoulder as a community in support of survivors of domestic violence. Raise a loud and clear voice that San Francisco is a safe place to reach out for and receive help.
We have about $2,860 to go.

Please help fund the 3rd billboard in Tagalog "Domestic Violence is NEVER a private matter" (mock-up below).

Your $10, $25, $50, $75 or $100 will go a long way to reassure all victims and witnesses of domestic violence that they can and should feel safe to report abuse.  We raised $900+ in 2 days so please contribute what you can.

We hope you can support this very important and urgent cause.
CLICK to contribute or go to www.loudsauce.com/campaigns/82.

Through a San Francisco-based startup called LoudSauce, FWN turned to the internet - to YOU - and to "crowdfunding" to raise money for the billboard.  SPREAD the word about this campaign - Facebook your friends, Twitter this message, forward this Email to your friends.

Take a stand and help your Filipina / Asian sisters and FWN install this billboard.

You've all heard it before: Food is something that really brings us together. Being Filipina American, I often crave for the homey Filipino dishes you can't buy in the nearest restaurant. Having been on the road a lot, I've had to start making these dishes on my own, often improvising with the ingredients available. I've come to make a list of these Filipino comfort foods and I'm pretty sure I'm not the first to do so. I stumbled upon an article on-line with an awesome recipe for turkey paksiw. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did....

9th Filipina Summit: Pinay Power 2012

    ===============

Time is running out for VAWA this year - if everyone makes 5 calls this week, we can get it done!

We all want to protect women of all ages and ethnicities in the US and prevent any harm that may come to them from injustices like abuse and violence. Help protect women across the nation:

TAKE ACTION:  Call your own senators and representative and tell them to demand congressional leaders solve the bluew slip procedural hold-up or we’ll give them the pink slip in November. More information.

    This is a very IMPORTANT
    message.

Supreme Court robe rage reveals conservatives' antipathy to critical thinking -POLITICO Arena

The robe rage directed at Justice Roberts from the four disgruntled dissenters upset that a Republican justice upheld a Republican mandate enacted by a Democratic Congress and president is stunning to behold. Spilling selective secrets of the judicial monastery to settle a score and prove to their conservative base that they somehow were betrayed by his burst of independent thinking says more about them than the alleged apostate. Marc Thiessen is wrong - both Republicans and Democrats have been "surprised" but surprised Democrats don't leak Court proceedings or call for impeachment. View article.

Most Philippine dances were originally patterned after European dances during the Spanish regime. Pandango Sa Ilaw, Cariñosa, Rigodon and Balitao are examples of these dances Filipinos are known for. Aside from these western-influenced dances, ethnic-created dances such as Tinikling made its way to nationwide recognition. Despite its apparent adaptation to western dances, still Filipinos pay tribute to their cultural roots.View article.

Desai: Bigger Voice for Asians Needed in US Society-Asia Society

The Pew Research Center recently released a study, The Rise of Asian Americans, which shows that the number of new Asian immigrants to the United States has overtaken the number of Latinos. The study adds that "the recent Asian arrivals [are] the most highly educated cohort of immigrants in U.S. history," with more than 60 percent of adults aged 25 to 64 holding a bachelor's degree or higher. They are also wealthier than the general U.S. population, with a median household income of $66,000 undefined the national median is $49,800.

Despite these achievements, an Asia Society study shows fewer Asian Pacific Americans (APA) in leadership positions in corporations and politics, as a percentage of the ethnicity's total. The 2012 study found that less than half of Asian Americans feel a sense of belonging to their corporate culture, with one reason being a lack of APAs in upper management. View article.

Where are the Women? My take on Media Sexism at POLITICO-The Arena

Where are the women? Rarely at the top and climbing a double stair to get there - ascending as professionals and as women, confronting gender stereotypes and breaking barriers along the way. For women of color this is a triple stair; for LGBT women of color a quadruple stair. Justice for Trayvon Martin

George Zimmerman's shooting of Trayvon Martin, an African American teenager, reveals a history of racism in Sanford, FL that has stubbornly refused to die. Weeks after the shooting, the Sanford police department is slow to release details of the shooting and, more surprisingly, has not arrested George Zimmerman, a man who has a history of violence.

We urge you to sign this petition to protect private citizens from gun violence and inept law enforcement. Florida's Attorney General Pam Bondi must step in and provide justice for Trayvon Martin, his family, and the community. Sign petition.

A Day in Philippine History: March 4, 1879, Rosa Sevilla was born in Tondo, Manila
    The Kahimyang Project

On March 4, 1879, Rosa Sevilla, educator, writer and one of the notable suffragists in Asia who fought for the Filipino women's right to vote, was born in Tondo, Manila.

She pursued her desired profession of being a teacher and graduated as "maestra superior" at Assumption College. Together with Pura Villanueva-Kalaw and Pilar Hidalgo-Lim, she lobbied and campaigned for woman suffrage.

Hence, since April 30, 1937, Filipino women have been granted the right to vote and to be voted in elective office, which has led to the election of two women presidents for the country. View article.

Report: 2011 National Census of Domestic Violence Services
    API Institute on Domestic Violence

An annual survey conducted by the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) provides insight into domestic violence services in the United States. On September 15, 2011 – one 24-hour period – domestic violence victim advocates served more than 67,000 victims and answered more than 22,000 emergency hotline calls.

This annual snapshot shows that shelters and programs continue to find a way to help almost the same number of victims in one day as in past years – a staggering 67,399 adults and children. However across United States there were 1,040 more unmet requests reported in the same day than in September 2011. View article.

Domestic violence bill stokes social issues fight
    CBSNews

Democrats in the U.S. Senate opened a new line of attack in their quest to win critical support from women voters in the Nov. 6 elections, calling for quick renewal of a program aimed at protecting women from domestic violence.

The call came from six female Democratic senators, accompanied by moderate Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski. The normally bipartisan issue has gotten entangled in election-year tensions that have Democrats and Republicans squaring off on nearly every piece of legislation.

The domestic violence bill, which could come up for Senate debate this month, is the latest in a series of fights that have erupted in recent weeks on social issues centered on women. View article.

    Early Feminism in the Philippines
    In Asia

The Philippines has been noted as having one of the smallest gender disparities in the world. The gender gap has been closed in both health and education; the country has had two female presidents (Corazon Aquino from 1986-1992 and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from 2001-2010); and had its first woman Supreme Court justice (Cecilia Muñoz Palma in 1973) before the United States had one (Sandra Day O’Connor in 1981).
