Ever heard of the Jones Law of 1916? This law is also known as The Philippine Autonomy Act, allowed for the first creation of a fully elected Philippine legislature. It was enacted on August 29, 1916 by the 64th United States Congress, and is known as the first formal declaration of the U.S. commit to granting the Philippines independence. According to Filipino Heritage: The Making of a Nation, "the law's preamble affirmed the promise of the U.S. to grant the Philippines independence as soon as a 'stable' government was established...It contained a bill of rights, which essentially mirrored the guarantees in the U.S. constitution." Furthermore, "the legislation was controlled by Filipinos, but the executive and judicial powers were still denied to them" (Roces, 2413). The very first Filipino to be the appointed chief justice was Cayetano Arellano, who served from 1901 to 1920, and is the longest serving chief justice.

    CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
As a kid, I moved around quite a bit, but there's always at least one thing that always reminds me of each and every placed I have lived. When I was in kindergarten, I lived a cute neighborhood filled with young families with kids just like me who went to my elementary school. However, just a year shy of finishing my elementary school days, my family uprooted and moved to another city.

I'll always have those memories of living in that cute little neighborhood, but now in my twenties, I don't think of that time in my life too often. Recently, I was walking down the aisles of a home goods store, stopping frequently to gently sniff candles...and one candle in particular sparked my interest from its beautiful exterior
    . I
removed the cap, and behold the beautiful smell of Jasmine flowers. The smell of the sweet flowers teleported me back to my jungle gym, swingin' sand box days, and right back to where my mom had planted the sampaguita by the front door of our old house in that cute neighborhood.

I remember my mom always picking the fallen Jasmine flowers on the cement floor just outside the front door of our house and placing them in a little glass dish on the table. I remember her sprinkling them on the counter in the bathroom, softly asking me, "Don't they smell good? These flowers are called sampaguita, or Jasmine."

If you didn't already know, the sampaguita is the national flower of the Philippines.
The white, tiny, sweet-smelling flower is found natively in Asia and are very tough plants that can grow through abuse. These flowers are said to symbolize strength, purity, and simplicity. There is also a legend about sampaguita in the Philippines.

If you would like to read The Legend of the Sampaguita, visit:

    FILIPINA CALL TO ACTION
    Funding Request from BAYAN USA:
In 2006, the Philippine military killed an average of one activist every 36 hours. Seven years later in 2013, the human rights situation hasn’t gotten any better thanks to the influence of the US Counter-Insurgency Guide, American military advisors and hundreds of millions of dollars in US aid to the Philippine military, which continues to commit human rights violations with impunity. Even those attempting to “defend the defenders” journalists exposing the problem through their reporting, and lawyers providing counsel to activists imprisoned on trumped up charges have become targets of repression themselves, victims of extra-judicial killings, violent harassment, illegal detention and surveillance by a state desperate to silence dissent.
This summer, we have the chance to help the Filipino people turn the tide in favor of peace and justice.  We’re writing to ask you to join us in making it happen by making a donation today.
In an effort to expand international attention on the human rights crisis in the Philippines and forge active solidarity toward lasting solutions, the International Conference on Human Rights and Peace in the Philippines will take place July 19-21. This conference will bring together survivors of human rights violations, human rights workers, and advocates from around the world to share their experiences with one another and develop strategies to resolve the root causes of the human rights crisis. Human and civil rights advocates, Filipino American organizations, churches, and others who believe in peace are mobilizing 40 people from the US to attend this conference.
But we need more support in order to bring delegates from the US to the Philippines, as well as to bring survivors of human rights violations from other parts of the Philippines to the conference, to ensure the success of this historic gathering. We hope you can help by making a donation today online by clicking here, or sending your donation by mail to: Filipino American Ministries, c/o BAYAN-USA/AYPAL, 1218 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA 94612 with “PSTF-ICHRP 2013” in the memo.

Message from Nilda Valmores (FWN100 '12), Executive Director of My Sister's House:
    Dear Friends,
I/we have been working with the local domestic violence shelter and they are having a special panel on addressing API issues -- trying to figure out how to improve their services to the API community.I am having a hard time finding a Filipino community leader. Any thoughts or suggestions? This is a golden opportunity I hate to waste.
The person doesn't have to be an expert or even knowledgeable about domestic violence; preferably they know something about the local Filipino community though. If you could forward their email address and/or phone number it would be much appreciated.

P.S. Special thanks to our May 2013 shelter sponsor, Anonymous and our June 2013 shelter sponsor, LMT Consulting.

If you ask most kids nowadays what their favorite game to play is, they probably will answer with popular video game titles such as Mario Kart or Pokemon, or maybe even randomly spit out non-video game titles like "ball wall". With their once again growing popularity, toys like kendama and yo-yo might even slip out kids' mouths. The invention of the yo-yo by the way, is attributed Pedro Flores, a Filipino who immigrated to the United States in 1915.
Most kids in the U.S. however, are probably not familiar with the game "sipa," a traditional kids game played in the Philippines. Sipa can be played by one person, or with teams. Similar to the American "hackey-sack", sipa involves kicking a rattan ball or large coin with shredded paper or plastic into the air with the inside of the ankle. If you want to teach kids sipa, visit http://tagaloglang.com/Filipino-Culture/Filipino-Games/sipa-filipino-national-sport.html for more info.

Do you know a Filipina woman in any of these places?
We’ve been told that Filipina women have migrated to many parts of the world
and we want to know who they are, what they’re doing and how they’re influencing their communities. We need your help in our search for the Filipina women who are impacting their countries and their local communities with their work. We want to invite the Global100 to the Filipina Summit on October 25th this year to San Francisco. To register for the early bird pricing, go to www.FilipinaWomensNetwork.org/events.

    Launch of the FWN Femtoring:
    Developing Tom
    orrow’s Filipina Leaders Today
When we selected the FWN100 awardees, we asked each awardee to do ONE thing – femtor a Filipina – pay forward and help build the Filipina community's pipeline of qualified leaders to increase the odds that some Filipinas will rise to the "president" position in all industry sectors.
So each year at our Filipina Leadership Summit, we host the "Pinay Speed Femtoring", a historic event in the Filipino American community. We gather - Femtors (FWN100 awardees) and Femtees - high school seniors, college and grad students and young professionals – so they can seek guidance on navigating their academic and professional needs.

    FWN Femtoring is the inn
ovative next step.  An online femtoring program that utilizes IntelliMatch – a unique algorithm that matches the skill sets of Femtors with the learning needs of Femtees. This program starts with a six-month Femtoring Learning Agreement between Femtors and Femtees; tracks conversations, activities, and learnings; and evaluates results of the femtoring relationship. End of 'Philippines?' A call to use only Filipinas for the country

The Fourth of July is coming up, and if you've got a party planned then that means there will be numerous hungry people knocking on your door! What's on your menu? If you're planning to cook up some traditional yummy Filipino cuisine, then you might also be cooking ginataan for dessert. Many of you know that one of the tasty ingredients commonly included in this dessert is taro (or Gabi). But how much about taro do you know besides its role in ginataan and its yummy flavor? Aside from China, the Philippines is home to the largest area devoted to taro in Asia. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, "about 34,000 hectares of land were devoted to taro, producing about 117,000 tonnes" in 1996. The two main systems for producing taro in the Philippines are dryland/upland and wetland/lowland cultivation, and it takes somewhere between 8-10 months to harvest after planting. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, taro leaves contain large amounts of minerals and vitamins A, B, and C. Also, for those who are allergic to milk and dairy, taro is a good alternative. Fun fact: "The Pinatubo Negritos of the Philippines used taro as medicine. The leaves and corns were boiled and eaten by women experiencing a difficult childbirth " (USDA.gov)

If you've been keeping up with the latest Wimbledon news, then you know just how shocking the early round play has been this year. In the first round, two-time champ Rafael Nadal was knocked out in the first round by Steve Darcis from Belgium, and in the second round the talented Roger Federer was beat in the second round. Not surprisingly though, most of the buzz in tennis is centered around well-known singles tennis names like Tsonga, Djokovic, Sharapova, and Williams. But what you probably don't hear much of are the athletes who are battling their way to make it as stars in their hometown, state, or country.
Tennis player Treat Huey is Filipino American and is playing doubles with his partner Dominic Inglot (Great Britain) in this year's Wimbledon. The left-handed tennis player, 27, was born in Washington D.C. and turned pro in 2008. Huey is currently ranked 28 in men's doubles. Huey and his partner Inglot have succeeded into the second round of play. To find out more about Huey or to follow his journey in this year's Wimbledon, click below:

FWN declares Mayor Hashimoto NOT welcome in San Francisco.
    FWN Statement to Hashimoto:
World War II "Comfort Women" are the over 200,000 girls and women abducted by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II who were forced to experience a life of systematic rape and enslavement. They are now mostly in their 90's and they are dying. They were taken from North Korea, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Timor L’Este and Taiwan.
In the Philippines, historians say there were about 1,000 girls abducted. Some were minors; others were deceptively recruited by middlemen; still more were detained and forcibly abducted.
In the early 1990s, Korean victims of Japan's military sexual slavery broke their silence and came forward nearly a half century after WWII, followed by other survivors in China, Taiwan, North Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Timor L'Este.
In July 2007, FWN witnessed a huge victory when, our efforts in conjunction with V-day and many other women’s organizations, resulted in the US House of Representatives passing a formal resolution calling for this apology from Japan, which has not yet been granted.
Today, the surviving "comfort women' are between 80-90 years of age.   As they are slowly dying off, their wish is for an official apology from the Japanese government, acknowledging what was done to them.   The Japanese government still denies legal responsibility, and even worse, the stories of these horrific war crimes against women were removed from Japanese history and text-books.
Today, we are surrounded by an invisible, violent crime that primarily impacts women and children – human trafficking – slavery in America, 2010.
“The Filipina Women's Network, now in its 10th year of its Campaign to STOP violence against Asian women and girls, condemns Mayor Hashimoto’s statements. We will not allow him to push back the many years of painstaking efforts to help women heal from the atrocities of war and perpetrators of rape and assault, “ said Marily Mondejar, CEO of Filipina Women's Network.
The Filipina Women's Network says to you, “Toru Hashimoto, you are not welcome in San Francisco, or any place where women have been united to fighting violence against women through the 15 years of the V-Day Global Movement, and this year’s One Billion Rising.  You are not welcome in over 190 countries, including your own.  Apologize now! Apologize personally and meet with the Comfort Women where they are located and learn first hand the atrocities perpetrated on them by your country’s Japanese soldiers.”

    CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS

A few days ago while talking with my younger brother and reading him children's stories, I suddenly wondered about folklore, myths, and popular children's stories in the Philippines. I then asked my mother about the stories she remembers being told as a child. After pondering and replying that Philippine folklore and legends were often read and taught to kids in school, she answered, "I remember The Legend of the Pineapple," and proceeded to tell me the story. Have you heard of this legend? If not, you can read it here: http://www.philsites.net/folklore/stories/legend9.html
Are there any stories or legends from the Philippines that you remember as child? Let me know by sending comments to epahayagan@ffwn.org

    FILIPINA CALL TO ACTION

Facebook Responds to Campaign, Cracks Down on Hate

In a historic victory for women's rights and online activism,  Facebook announced this week - in response to the massive social media campaign many of you participated in - that it would revamp its hate speech policy to better monitor images and messages of violence against women. Tens of thousands of you tweeted and emailed the world's largest social network - and its advertisers - demanding that they include gender-based hate speech in their definition of "hateful content" not allowed on the site. Not only has Facebook acknowledged their prior failures, but they are committed to including a coalition of women's groups in future decisions around hate speech.

This team effort to successfully challenge Facebook - led by Women, Action & the Media, The Everyday Sexism Project and Soraya Chemaly - was proof that each of us has something to contribute to this movement.

Thank you for taking action and once again displaying the power of our collective voice to influence change across society. Facebook has over 1 billion users worldwide, so the announcement itself - as it is shared and discussed across the internet this week - has major ramifications for women and girls everywhere. Furthermore, the fact that such a large corporation was forced to respond to sexism and misogyny, based on the online actions of feminists and their allies, should inspire us all to continue the work that we do daily.

Even before Facebook's decision, as a result of consumer pressure on Twitter, corporations as large as Nissan had decided to halt advertising on the social network until something was done about the images of violence against women that exist there. Like the success of #NotBuyingIt, the #FBrape campaign displays what's possible when we use our dollars to promote the positive and fight the negative. It's clear no battle is too big to win.

This week, as you decide what channel to watch, what shirt to buy or where to spend your time online, think about that product's or that company's impact on women and girls. And then remember the power you hold in your pocket. If they use sexism to sell, don't spend your money on it, and use Twitter to let them and your friends know that you're #NotBuyingIt!

Let's take the momentum of this week's progress to fuel an even greater commitment to using our voices to challenge sexism wherever and whenever we see it. Together there's no obstacle that we can't overcome on the road to gender equality.

New York's Fairy Wedmother is Filipina

    CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS

On June 12, 1898, the declaration of Philippine independence was led by revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo. However, Spain nor the United States acknowledged the independence for the Philippines. In the 1898 Treaty of Paris, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States, and when the U.S. tried to carry out the treaty, "a three-year conflict, now called the Philippine-American War, ensued." It was on July 4, 1946 through the Treaty of Manila that the U.S. finally granted the Philippines independence. However, June 12th was declared a public holiday in the Philippines by President Diosdado Macapagal on May 12, 1962. Want to learn more?

    About Judge Lorna Schofield:
Ms. Schofield's life story is the epitome of the "American Dream."  Growing up in New Haven, Indiana, she was the only child of a Filipina war bride who married an American service man.  She was raised by her mother, who came to the United States and became a pharmacist, stressing hard work, achievement, independence and self-sufficiency.  Ms. Schofield lived in a predominantly Caucasian and blue collar community, where there was little ethnic diversity.  Despite the odds against her, Ms. Schofield went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from Indiana University.  Thereafter, she graduated from New York University School of Law, where she was an editor of the Law Review and a Pomeroy Scholar. Ms. Schofield's achievements clearly did not stop there.
Prior to joining the bench, Judge Schofield practiced at the New York law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton for over 20 years. In 1991, she became the firm's first partner of color, and, for the past year, has served as Of Counsel to the firm.  Before joining Debevoise, she served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York (Criminal Division) for four years.  Ms. Schofield was also the first Asian Pacific American to chair the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association, and she previously served as a member of the ABA's Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary.  In 2008, the National Law Journal named Ms. Schofield one of the nation's 50 most influential minority lawyers.

Kalayaan 2013: Celebrating a Legacy of Filipino Creativity, Talent, and Ingenuity."
Mabuhay! We are proud to announce that one of the biggest and most exciting celebrations commemorating the 115th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence will happen at noon on Saturday, 15 June 2013 at the heart of San Francisco --- the historic Union Square. Big business as well as entrepreneurs will mingle under a big tent and reach out to the community promoting their various services and products, while attendees are entertained by a long list of artists, dancers and musical groups. Highlight of this free event is a concert at 6 in the evening headlined by no less than Apl de Ap of the Black Eyed Peas.
This year’s theme is “Kalayaan 2013: Celebrating a Legacy of Filipino Creativity, Talent and Ingenuity.” As such Saturday's program will feature not only cultural and entertainment segments but a business component as well, kicked off by our very own Dado Banatao, to bring the Philippines' current economic successes and upgraded forecasts to the forefront. A two-day business seminar will also be held prior to Saturday’s event. Dubbed “Philippine Business Tech Expo and Conference,” this program will showcase the Philippines as one of the most important Business and Tech Destinations globally.
Scheduled on June 13 and 14, the business conference, organized by the Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC), will be held at the Philippine Center on Sutter Street in San Francisco. The conference theme will focus on the Philippines as Asia’s best kept secret and a Gateway to ASEAN, with topics ranging from its pathway to current successes, emerging industries, rise of start-ups, social enterprise/sustainability and case studies of real companies who are innovating and benefitting from the wave of change in the country.
This community-led celebration is a collaborative effort by the Filipino American Community leaders from the San Francisco Bay Area in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General. Opportunity for sponsorships for the event and rental of booths during the event are available. For more information on this exciting event:
Please visit www.KalayaanSF.com or email: info@KalayaanSF.com
