    PINAY LIFESTYLE
End of 'Philippines?' A call to use only Filipinas for the country
Many Filipinos reacted strongly, albeit belatedly, after the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) issued a resolution last April to use "Filipinas" instead of "Pilipinas," saying the new term recognizes the country's history and development as a nation- Read more...

    CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
The Fourth of July is coming up, and if you've got a party planned then that means there will be numerous hungry people knocking on your door! What's on your menu? If you're planning to cook up some traditional yummy Filipino cuisine, then you might also be cooking ginataan for dessert. Many of you know that one of the tasty ingredients commonly included in this dessert is taro (or Gabi). But how much about taro do you know besides its role in ginataan and its yummy flavor? Aside from China, the Philippines is home to the largest area devoted to taro in Asia. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, "about 34,000 hectares of land were devoted to taro, producing about 117,000 tonnes" in 1996. The two main systems for producing taro in the Philippines are dryland/upland and wetland/lowland cultivation, and it takes somewhere between 8-10 months to harvest after planting. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, taro leaves contain large amounts of minerals and vitamins A, B, and C. Also, for those who are allergic to milk and dairy, taro is a good alternative. Fun fact: "The Pinatubo Negritos of the Philippines used taro as medicine. The leaves and corns were boiled and eaten by women experiencing a difficult childbirth " (USDA.gov)

    CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
If you've been keeping up with the latest Wimbledon news, then you know just how shocking the early round play has been this year. In the first round, two-time champ Rafael Nadal was knocked out in the first round by Steve Darcis from Belgium, and in the second round the talented Roger Federer was beat in the second round. Not surprisingly though, most of the buzz in tennis is centered around well-known singles tennis names like Tsonga, Djokovic, Sharapova, and Williams. But what you probably don't hear much of are the athletes who are battling their way to make it as stars in their hometown, state, or country.
Tennis player Treat Huey is Filipino American and is playing doubles with his partner Dominic Inglot (Great Britain) in this year's Wimbledon. The left-handed tennis player, 27, was born in Washington D.C. and turned pro in 2008. Huey is currently ranked 28 in men's doubles. Huey and his partner Inglot have succeeded into the second round of play. To find out more about Huey or to follow his journey in this year's Wimbledon, click below:

    IN THIS ISSUE:
FWN declares Mayor Hashimoto NOT welcome in San Francisco.
    FWN Statement to Hashimoto:
World War II "Comfort Women" are the over 200,000 girls and women abducted by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II who were forced to experience a life of systematic rape and enslavement. They are now mostly in their 90's and they are dying. They were taken from North Korea, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Timor L’Este and Taiwan.
In the Philippines, historians say there were about 1,000 girls abducted. Some were minors; others were deceptively recruited by middlemen; still more were detained and forcibly abducted.
In the early 1990s, Korean victims of Japan's military sexual slavery broke their silence and came forward nearly a half century after WWII, followed by other survivors in China, Taiwan, North Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Timor L'Este.
In July 2007, FWN witnessed a huge victory when, our efforts in conjunction with V-day and many other women’s organizations, resulted in the US House of Representatives passing a formal resolution calling for this apology from Japan, which has not yet been granted.
Today, the surviving "comfort women' are between 80-90 years of age.   As they are slowly dying off, their wish is for an official apology from the Japanese government, acknowledging what was done to them.   The Japanese government still denies legal responsibility, and even worse, the stories of these horrific war crimes against women were removed from Japanese history and text-books.
Today, we are surrounded by an invisible, violent crime that primarily impacts women and children – human trafficking – slavery in America, 2010.
“The Filipina Women's Network, now in its 10th year of its Campaign to STOP violence against Asian women and girls, condemns Mayor Hashimoto’s statements. We will not allow him to push back the many years of painstaking efforts to help women heal from the atrocities of war and perpetrators of rape and assault, “ said Marily Mondejar, CEO of Filipina Women's Network.
The Filipina Women's Network says to you, “Toru Hashimoto, you are not welcome in San Francisco, or any place where women have been united to fighting violence against women through the 15 years of the V-Day Global Movement, and this year’s One Billion Rising.  You are not welcome in over 190 countries, including your own.  Apologize now! Apologize personally and meet with the Comfort Women where they are located and learn first hand the atrocities perpetrated on them by your country’s Japanese soldiers.”

A few days ago while talking with my younger brother and reading him children's stories, I suddenly wondered about folklore, myths, and popular children's stories in the Philippines. I then asked my mother about the stories she remembers being told as a child. After pondering and replying that Philippine folklore and legends were often read and taught to kids in school, she answered, "I remember The Legend of the Pineapple," and proceeded to tell me the story. Have you heard of this legend? If not, you can read it here: http://www.philsites.net/folklore/stories/legend9.html

    FILIPINA CALL TO ACTION

Facebook Responds to Campaign, Cracks Down on Hate

In a historic victory for women's rights and online activism,  Facebook announced this week - in response to the massive social media campaign many of you participated in - that it would revamp its hate speech policy to better monitor images and messages of violence against women. Tens of thousands of you tweeted and emailed the world's largest social network - and its advertisers - demanding that they include gender-based hate speech in their definition of "hateful content" not allowed on the site. Not only has Facebook acknowledged their prior failures, but they are committed to including a coalition of women's groups in future decisions around hate speech.

This team effort to successfully challenge Facebook - led by Women, Action & the Media, The Everyday Sexism Project and Soraya Chemaly - was proof that each of us has something to contribute to this movement.

Thank you for taking action and once again displaying the power of our collective voice to influence change across society. Facebook has over 1 billion users worldwide, so the announcement itself - as it is shared and discussed across the internet this week - has major ramifications for women and girls everywhere. Furthermore, the fact that such a large corporation was forced to respond to sexism and misogyny, based on the online actions of feminists and their allies, should inspire us all to continue the work that we do daily.

Even before Facebook's decision, as a result of consumer pressure on Twitter, corporations as large as Nissan had decided to halt advertising on the social network until something was done about the images of violence against women that exist there. Like the success of #NotBuyingIt, the #FBrape campaign displays what's possible when we use our dollars to promote the positive and fight the negative. It's clear no battle is too big to win.

This week, as you decide what channel to watch, what shirt to buy or where to spend your time online, think about that product's or that company's impact on women and girls. And then remember the power you hold in your pocket. If they use sexism to sell, don't spend your money on it, and use Twitter to let them and your friends know that you're #NotBuyingIt!

Let's take the momentum of this week's progress to fuel an even greater commitment to using our voices to challenge sexism wherever and whenever we see it. Together there's no obstacle that we can't overcome on the road to gender equality.

On June 12, 1898, the declaration of Philippine independence was led by revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo. However, Spain nor the United States acknowledged the independence for the Philippines. In the 1898 Treaty of Paris, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States, and when the U.S. tried to carry out the treaty, "a three-year conflict, now called the Philippine-American War, ensued." It was on July 4, 1946 through the Treaty of Manila that the U.S. finally granted the Philippines independence. However, June 12th was declared a public holiday in the Philippines by President Diosdado Macapagal on May 12, 1962. Want to learn more?

    About Judge Lorna Schofield:
Ms. Schofield's life story is the epitome of the "American Dream."  Growing up in New Haven, Indiana, she was the only child of a Filipina war bride who married an American service man.  She was raised by her mother, who came to the United States and became a pharmacist, stressing hard work, achievement, independence and self-sufficiency.  Ms. Schofield lived in a predominantly Caucasian and blue collar community, where there was little ethnic diversity.  Despite the odds against her, Ms. Schofield went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from Indiana University.  Thereafter, she graduated from New York University School of Law, where she was an editor of the Law Review and a Pomeroy Scholar. Ms. Schofield's achievements clearly did not stop there.
Prior to joining the bench, Judge Schofield practiced at the New York law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton for over 20 years. In 1991, she became the firm's first partner of color, and, for the past year, has served as Of Counsel to the firm.  Before joining Debevoise, she served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York (Criminal Division) for four years.  Ms. Schofield was also the first Asian Pacific American to chair the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association, and she previously served as a member of the ABA's Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary.  In 2008, the National Law Journal named Ms. Schofield one of the nation's 50 most influential minority lawyers.

Kalayaan 2013: Celebrating a Legacy of Filipino Creativity, Talent, and Ingenuity."
Mabuhay! We are proud to announce that one of the biggest and most exciting celebrations commemorating the 115th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence will happen at noon on Saturday, 15 June 2013 at the heart of San Francisco --- the historic Union Square. Big business as well as entrepreneurs will mingle under a big tent and reach out to the community promoting their various services and products, while attendees are entertained by a long list of artists, dancers and musical groups. Highlight of this free event is a concert at 6 in the evening headlined by no less than Apl de Ap of the Black Eyed Peas.
This year’s theme is “Kalayaan 2013: Celebrating a Legacy of Filipino Creativity, Talent and Ingenuity.” As such Saturday's program will feature not only cultural and entertainment segments but a business component as well, kicked off by our very own Dado Banatao, to bring the Philippines' current economic successes and upgraded forecasts to the forefront. A two-day business seminar will also be held prior to Saturday’s event. Dubbed “Philippine Business Tech Expo and Conference,” this program will showcase the Philippines as one of the most important Business and Tech Destinations globally.
Scheduled on June 13 and 14, the business conference, organized by the Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC), will be held at the Philippine Center on Sutter Street in San Francisco. The conference theme will focus on the Philippines as Asia’s best kept secret and a Gateway to ASEAN, with topics ranging from its pathway to current successes, emerging industries, rise of start-ups, social enterprise/sustainability and case studies of real companies who are innovating and benefitting from the wave of change in the country.
This community-led celebration is a collaborative effort by the Filipino American Community leaders from the San Francisco Bay Area in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General. Opportunity for sponsorships for the event and rental of booths during the event are available. For more information on this exciting event:
Please visit www.KalayaanSF.com or email: info@KalayaanSF.com

                      CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
I'm sure you have heard of Wonder Woman, there is no doubt. But it was only until recently that I came across Darna, the Filipina superheroine in Filipino Comics. Darna, a female character created by Mars Revelo and Nestor Redondo, is Narda on Earth.
After spending some time reading up on Wonder Woman "Darna," I came across an article by Women's Media Center that talks about why the creation of Wonder Woman is so "unique" and "progressive," as well as the film "Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines".
