Woohoo! Congratulations to Leah Laxamana, former FWN Fellow!

Leah completed her 14-month National Urban Fellows program (www.nuf.org) and graduated last July 25 with a Masters in Public Administration from Baruch College School of Public Affairs. For her mentorship, Leah was assigned to work at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in Princeton, NJ for nine months (Sept-May) where she helped the foundation manage and launch their global funding program, as well as with the internal engagement efforts for their ongoing strategic planning process.

As far as next steps, Leah is getting ready to leave for Brazil next week where she will spend the next couple of months advancing my Portuguese language skills, studying capoeira, and volunteering with a nonprofit organization that works with at-risk families to address the social determinants of health. When she's done, Leah plans to return to SF/Bay Area and find a role with an organization, ideally focused in global health/education and community development.
Please join us in congratulating Leah on her success and wish her many more!

PINAY LIFESTYLE
Laments on the Filipino Diaspora
Over the past four decades since the seventies, millions of Filipinos have left the homeland in search of better opportunities abroad. There are now an estimated 10 million Filipinos who are either immigrants to their adopted countries or overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). - Read more.

CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
In the Southern part of Philippines the art of kulintangan is "an ancient form of orchestra music which predates the influences of Islam, Christianity or the West." The actual instrument is called the kulintang, and is comprised of a horizontal row of brass or bronze gongs laid across a wooden rack. To play the instrument, one must hit the gongs with two wooden beaters (pakaraguian.wordpress.com/what-is-kulintang).

Do you own a kulintang or know anyone that can play this instrument? Let us know or make a video on YouTube and send us the link!
