About Level Playing Field Institute
Work Hard. Get Ahead. What Happened?
Imagine if there were a level playing field for everyone. Doors would open. Opportunities would emerge. Racial and cultural differences would be acknowledged as positive attributes for a diverse society. All talented students, regardless of socio-economic status, would be academically prepared to apply to, and graduate from, top colleges and universities.
In the workplace, individuals would go as far as their interests and capabilities would take them. This is what getting ahead should be about: no hidden barriers, no obstacles, no unfair advantages. It should be about what you know, not whom you know, or where you grew up. That's part of the American dream, but sadly, it's more myth than reality.
With this in mind, Freada Kapor Klein and Mitchell Kapor, both serial entrepreneurs and both highly committed to work-life quality for their employees, decided to do something about it. Freada founded the Level Playing Field Institute. Mitchell Kapor is best known for creating Lotus Development Corporation, and Freada Klein was the first Director of Employee Relations at Lotus, after which she went on to a career as a leading expert witness and sexual harassment/diversity consultant for Fortune 500 companies and professional services firms.
Freada Kapor Klein, Ph.D., Founder and Board Chair, Level Playing Field Institute
Freada has been working on issues of discrimination and diversity since the early 1970's. In 1976 she co-founded the first organization in the United States to offer comprehensive services, training, and consultation on the topic of sexual harassment to both the private and public sectors. After receiving her Ph.D. in social policy and research from the Heller School at Brandeis University, with an SSRC fellowship for the study of sexual harassment in federal government employment, she became the first Director of Employee Relations for Lotus Development Corporation. At Lotus, she was responsible for employee relations, affirmative action, management development and training, performance appraisal, and employee complaint channels.
After leaving Lotus, Freada launched her own business that allowed her to combine activism and research, and to impact the workplace. She became the President of Klein Associates, Inc., a boutique organizational development and human resource consulting firm dedicated to linking employee needs with business strategy, particularly regarding issues of employee diversity.
For many years, Freada also served as an expert witness in pivotal legal cases involving sexual harassment.
