FILIPINA SUMMIT:

Power, Leadership & Influence

It is time to lead.

Oct. 22 and 23, 2004

War Memorial Building (Room 207)

401 Van Ness Avenue at McAllister Street

San Francisco, CA 94102

MISSIONE

The Filipina Summit is part of a larger FWN campaign - "Shape the Filipina Image," to promote positive images and create leadership opportunities

for Filipina women. The Filipina Summit is about building the Filipina community's pipeline of qualified leaders, increasing our odds that some will rise to the president position in corporate, nonprofit and government sectors.

PURPOSEE

The Filipina Women's Network has designed an event for sharing

strategies on leadership, power, and influence:

  • To usher in new paradigms that fuel progress and sustainable change
  • To build our leadership capacities and develop competencies so we can create an authentic voice
  • To celebrate Filipina culture and history while also having a lasting impact in our own future

WHY THE FILIPINA SUMMIT IN OCTOBER?

The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) established Filipino American History Month in 1992 as the official month that

recognizes the contributions and experiences of Filipinos in America.

They chose October because the earliest documented proof of

Filipino presence in the Continental United States was in October

1587 in Morro Bay, California . The first known Filipinos landed on

North American soil, via a Spanish galleon trade boat named

Nuestra Senora de Buena Esperanza, which means "Our Lady of

Good Hope." (Source: www.fanhs-national.org)

FWN joins FANHS in celebrating October as a significant time to study the advancement of Filipina Americans in the history of the United States, as a favorable time of celebration, remembrance, reflection

and motivation, and as a relevant time to renew more efforts towards research, examination and promulgation of Filipina American history and culture.

FWN also honors another important celebration - Women's History Month annually in March joining 28+ women's organizations in the

San Francisco Bay Area. This year's highlight was the production of

The Vagina Monologues in Taglish (in collaboration with V-Day) to create awareness about violence being perpetrated against Filipina women and girls.

The FWN Summit is a program of FWN's Shape the Filipina Image Campaign and its programming is built upon the 12 Basic Needs for

Life Empowerment.

Through learning workshops, Filipina women will be able

to honestly:

  • Assess strengths and discover professional development needs
  • Discuss how others perceive their effectiveness.
  • Evaluate their own leadership styles.
  • Explore cultural issues that impact career goals.
  • Begin a process of growth that will help Filipinas become better leaders.

BUILDING CAPACITY

FWN provides tools to improve life skills, career competencies, and

capacities for leadership effectiveness - thinking strategically, acting decisively, and influencing others. Focusing on real life, business,

and career advancement experiences from practitioners, corporate managers, and community leaders combined with peer-to-peer networking are the distinguishing features of FWN meetings.

TWO OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING: choose your track . . .

A. 10/22 (FRIDAY)

IMAGE BUILDS BUSINESS (9:00am - 5:00pm)

“A good public image makes friends, builds customer loyalty, attracts investors, motivates staff, and helps you survive in difficult economic times.
A weak image is a liability that can cost you lost opportunities and can drive you out of business. Your image is like the weather.  People notice  when it is extremely good or extremely bad."”

--Charles A. Fombrun, Professor,
Stern School of Business, New York University; and
Executive Director, Reputation Institute

The Invisible Bottom Line: Your personal or business image is hard to gain; easy to lose; and very difficult to recapture. We don't pay attention

to our image until out point of view is questioned; or until the effectiveness of our product or service is doubted.

We start with a discussion of two areas that are interconnected in image analysis --the organizational image and personal image. The two image aspects important in our daily corporate lives --wardrobing and business dining etiquette--are addressed in separate sessions.

The images of organization and metaphorical thinking in organization analysis

Organizational diagnostic tools used in image assessment

Using the Seven Aspects of Image to Influence Results:

1) Color Psychology -

Communicates subconscious messages of health, power, culture.

2) Wardrobe Strategies -

Methods to express lifestyle and profession.

3) Grooming -

The character of a company, its products, services, and employees.

4) Communications -

Delivery of messages though verbal and non-verbal techniques.

5) Protocol and Etiquette -

Behavior in business and social situations.

6) Image Objects -

Persons, places or things influencing our perceptions of products and companies.

7) Inner Image -

Relationships regarding security, self-hood, belonging, purpose.

The Business Case for Branding Your Product, Service and You
Politicians use it.  We base our buying decisions on it.  What is this thing called a "brand"?  How do you determine the power of a brand?  How does branding apply to power, leadership and influence?

Establishing a "brand" is absolutely critical to long term, sustainable business growth. In this interactive seminar, participants will learn the secrets of branding experts and how to apply these principles for their product, company or personal image and why image builds business.

Business Dining Etiquette (tutorial lunch)

90% of deals are closed during a meal. As we assume leadership positions, entertaining or hosting clients are skills that are not taught in business schools. Dining etiquette is essential in creating a good impression with clients and prospects. During the tutorial lunch, we will discuss:
•  Modern table manners
•  Restaurant etiquette
•  What to order and not

This session will enable you to feel comfortable in any dining situation.

Power, Poise, Presence – What Your Wardrobe Says About You

Wardrobe strategies in image management are methods to express lifestyle and the work that you do. Clothing and accessories are like currencies used to barter goodwill. A company that has a dress code says a lot about its organizational culture and artifacts.

At this session, we will look into women's issues about wardrobing and clothing by asking the following questions:
Are your mornings filled with "dress distress"?
Do you have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear?
Does your wardrobe image communicate your personal and professional best?

No matter who you are or what you do, the way you dress and present yourself has a major impact on your success. Despite platitudes to the contrary, you are evaluated by the image you project.  Competition is fierce and your image can be an asset or a hindrance. We will show you what to do.

FILIPINA SUMMIT: Leadership, Power & Influence.

FULL SUMMIT GATHERINGS:

HONORING FILIPINA AMERICAN HISTORY

We open the Summit with a Filipino ceremony typically used in celebrations using Filipino instruments, songs and the "spoken word".  At the start of each full gathering, our Summit weavers will bring us together as a community.

Using Future Search principles, we will reflect on the past, present and future of Filipina American history. Participants will note milestones they have experienced over the last 30 years on the long paper strips on the walls.  They will note personal, global and Filipina community milestones so everyone can see at the end of the day what has been shared and what must be done.

All day, we will weave into the Summit sessions, Filipino rituals to re-kindle and honor our heritage.

HONEST CONVERSATIONS: What is "Pinay Power"? How can we develop it to better ourselves and our communities?

A lively fishbowl discussion of the cultural, political, and spiritual aspects of Filipina/American identity, leadership and power.  Panelists will address the following questions:

1. How do we define PINAY POWER? Who has it? How is it different/same than other forms of feminist thought? Is it important to carve out a distinct space for Filipina/American feminism

rather than emphasizing its place as part of global feminism?

2. Given the importance of decolonization and anti-imperialist thought in Filipino American

cultural studies today, how do we address the impact of globalization and global capital in relation to definitions of Filipino American "success"?

3. What are the cultural and spiritual bases for Filipina American theory and activism? How might they evolve over time?

4. Given the patriarchal and racist nature of US culture itself, what Filipino American cultural

norms prevent/inhibit Pinays from taking on leadership roles in the community, in business, etc? What can be done to address this?

5. How might we best reach out to young Pinays to encourage their interest in leadership?

6. How might we best translate academically-generated theories of Filipina American feminism to Pinays outside of the academy?

Despite having the highest levels of graduate education, Asian women are less likely than other women of color to hold a position within three levels of the CEO or to have line or supervisory responsibilities.  Many differences that influence Asian women's values and experiences regarding work and home were found between two groups of women: More Acculturated and Less Acculturated.  Find out more about the results of this study and learn the strategies to navigate the workplace.

STANDING AT THE CROSSROADS: Choices and Tradeoffs of High Achieving Women

As Filipina women move into leadership and managerial positions in record numbers, there is an increasing need to understand how they will prioritize and integrate the many new roles and possibilities available to them.

The Center for Creative Leadership researched the fundamental pressures that influence the

career and personal decisions high-achieving women make. In an interactive session, you will

learn the strategies CCL has identified on how women adapt to the many demands that both challenge and enhance women's lives. The findings have been published by the Academy of Management Journal , its implications on international women managers were discussed in a

Euro Business article, and a book has been released by Jossey-Bass/Wiley.

The leadership insights you will glean from this session is perhaps the richest and most practical guide you will ever have on what does and doesn't work as you navigate your own career. Ever been in a group trying to make a "team decision"? Did you wonder if it meant that the boss wanted lots of input and discussion before deciding or if it meant that a decision wasn't made

until everyone agreed? Many managers trip themselves up by failing to create clarity on group decisions.

Managers also trip themselves up at either end of the decision spectrum --they either make all the decisions themselves, leaving their team feeling disenfranchised and demotivated-- or they think they are supposed to make every decision by consensus and bring the group to a halt with endless meetings.

Whether you are a group leader or member, this workshop will give you practical tools for

managing the conundrums of group decision making.
