FWN Professional Development Series (6/18 thru 8/13)
FWN's programming launched in 2002 is designed to reflect FWN's mission and goals:
- Enhance public perceptions of Filipina women's capacities to lead,
- Change biases against Filipina women's leadership abilities, and
- Promote the entry of Filipina women into positions of leadership in corporate, government, and nonprofit sectors.
The series is based on the 12 Life Challenges for Empowerment adapted from the work of Schein, Farren, Hudson and Kaye. FWN workshops and seminars are designed around these life areas which represent the diverse needs of FWN members. Workshop facilitators are invited specialists who contribute their knowledge for the advancement and development of FWN members and Filipina women. The Professional Development Series can be taken by anyone regardless of education, work experience, age or life situation.
Professional Development Philosophy
The Professional Development Series builds on the 12 life challenges which an individual confronts at each stage of adulthood. The program is best appreciated when participants take the Life Empowerment Overview. It provides a practical foundation for career pathing and life planning. The overview takes a three-dimensional approach - the ability to reflect and learn from our past, acknowledge our accomplishments to date and design a future that could bring career satisfaction and life fulfillment.
Manage your current life issues and explore your options in each of the 12 Anchors for personal and professional empowerment:
1. Community - Participating, volunteering, helping others in our community (youth, schools, public service, politics)
2. Economic Security - Managing personal resources, income, budgeting, savings, investments, insurance
3. Environment/Safety - Caring about your physical surroundings, e.g. recycling, pollution, waste removal
4. Family/Kinship - Caring for life partners, marriages, children, parents, extended family
5. Health & Well-Being - Mental, emotional and physical health, feeling good about yourself and others
6. Home/Shelter - Caring for and improving personal space - home, office, car, desk, etc.
7. Learning - Acquiring and applying new knowledge, skills, and abilities to improve different areas of life
8. Leisure - Diversifying interests and renewing energy through sports, hobbies, entertainment
9. Social Relationships - Getting along with all types of people, nurturing friends, making new acquaintances
10. Spirituality - Exploring the meaning of life through philosophy, religion, humor, the arts, nature
11. Mobility - Ability to move from place to place to take care of our needs as well as our families and friends
12. Work/Career - Choosing a field, feeling satisfied, contributing to society, creating balance

Change is a constant in our lives and it can mean many different options. We invite you to a hands-on workshop that will give you the ability and confidence to embark on your personal journey in exploring the rest of your life.

6/25 - Career Anchors
Do you have a job or do you have a career?
What motivates and directs your work? Some people are very content to have a quiet, uneventful job, while others thrive on constant change and excitement.
In many cases, people select a career for all the wrong reasons, and find their jobs are incompatible with their true values. This situation results in feelings of career angst and discontent. To help people avoid these problems, Career Anchors help people uncover their real values and use them to make better career choices.
A "Career Anchor" is a combination of perceived areas of competence, motives, and values relating to professional work choices.
This session will help you understand your career motives. Participants will complete an assessment to provide new insight into your career values, an understanding of your career history, and how to create future career paths.

8/6 - Being A Bi-Cultural Filipino / Cross-Cultural Dynamics
Living & Doing Business in the U.S.
"While perceptions may not be the ultimate truth, they are what people use to make decisions."
- Breaking the Glass Ceiling
Values and Culture Statements are those actions and behaviors that we think are important. They guide our day-to-day choices. As Filipinos adapt to the U.S. culture, some of our Filipino values change and evolve. Others remain constant throughout our lives. When our values and culture statements don't match our adopted culture or our organization's values, we often feel stressed, out of sync and burned out.
Clarifying and prioritizing our values and culture statements make it easier to determine our career choices and priorities. When our values and culture statements are aligned, we have more energy in making important decisions at work, at home and in relationships.
"If you are operating in a globalized economy, perceptions of other participants matter much more - whether they are right or wrong. You have to take those perceptions and make them an important input into your decision making."

8/13 - Health & Well-Being
Developing a relationship with yourself
This is an important health issue for Filipina women because there is very little discussion about it in our community.
- How can we be involved in healthy relationships with others if we don't have a good relationship with ourselves?
- How can we participate in community or environmental renewal if we don't have the energy?
- Will our homes be places of joy or cages?
- Do we fully understand the implications of stress or do we ignore it? What are we doing about it?
A discussion of myths and facts from a cultural perspective regarding physical and mental health, attitudes about aging, dignity and self-worth, esteem as a social dimension in which others hold us, and opportunities for action - looking out for yourself!
